Robert J. Bechtel, PhD

Lead Scientist
Has nearly 30 years experience applying advanced computing technologies to problems in the defense and commercial sectors. Dr. Bechtel's expertise lies in the areas of rule-based inference, natural language processing, knowledge representation, and neuropsychiatry. Prior to joining Soar Technology, he was Senior Scientist at Eclectic Computing Concepts, where he led projects in Battle Effects Assessment for JWAC and CENTCOM, and created an intelligence analyst workstation for a non-US intelligence service. Other positions have included: VP, System Development, Concurrent Knowledge Systems; Group Leader, Merit Technology; Director, Knowledge Engineering, UCCEL Corporation; and Scientist, Naval Ocean Systems Center. Since 1982, he has been Chief Technical Officer of GB Software, where he created a specialized natural language processing system capable of extracting meaningful indications of psychologically interesting states (such as anxiety and hostility) from written transcripts of verbal samples. Dr. Bechtel holds a BA in English, Loyola Marymount University; MS in Computer Science, Indiana University, Bloomington; and PhD in Information and Computer Science, University of California, Irvine.
